I think of myself as an artist. My work is currently in writing, photographs, and video. Over the years, my practice has taken me across the world, working to commission, travelling and sketching, then returning to the studio to prepare work for exhibition. Among the journeys were expeditions to Tibet, China, and Nepal in 1989 and 1990, to Guatemala and Belize in 1995, and three months painting in the Galapagos Islands the following year. Mid-career, I trained in sculpture at Camberwell College of Arts.
Almost Perfect;
For ten years, I ran Almost Perfect, a jewellery company based in Mousehole, Cornwall. The work was shown at design fairs, made to commission, and sold through shops across the country.
Crisis;
From 1986 to 1994, I volunteered with Crisis, the charity for single homeless people. I served as Open Christmas Shift Leader across three separate years, and sat on the Open Christmas Committee for the final two.
Long-distance motorcycling;
I have ridden overland across two continents. In 2005, as part of a multi-national team, we rode from Vladivostok to St Petersburg, raising $800,000 for several charities. We funded life-saving operations for 70 children..
In 2017 and 2018, I was one of the organisers and a rider in the Band of Bikers. Our team rode from Bangkok to Tbilisi for ActionAid.
Long-distance walking;
In 2020, I walked the Via di Francesco, from Florence to Assisi to Rome, through the Appenines. In 2021, there was a 1,000 kilometre walk from Dorset to Edinburgh for Freedom from Torture, having run the London Marathon for the same charity in 2016. In 2022, I completed the Camino de Santiago. In 2025, I supported the Incense Route Expedition as a medic, walking across part of the Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia, from the Yemeni border to Medina, running a blister clinic every morning and evening.
